Wild west type goons that were trying to kill my girlfriend my mother and my puppies. They continuely came back and time after time I would beat them back. There was about eight or so but they were relentless. Finally 3 demons appeared and offered to help both sides if only to see who would ultimately win if only to promote the bloodshed and ultimately see a winner in this battle. The first was a wise monkey who gave me long suffering. As long as he was in my life I would suffer. I think he represented addictions/envy. The next never took shape but caused my flesh to randomly tear off in strips. This was guilt I think. The last was a griffin who had endured even worse pain than I can imagine. This was fear I think. He whipped me several times with his tail so I could taste his pain. This was the only one of the three demons I actually spoke to. I told him that from the beating I received from him I could tell that his pain was far greater than I could ever feel and that I had an intimate respect for that. All these demons did while the goons would attack me at night is just watch and help out occasionally on either side. Finally, they gave in and realized that I was not going to be defeated nor was I going to win against the constant barage of cowboy goons. At one point they stopped the fighting and said we are in an eternal struggle and that only by drinking from the same sweet tea would peace between us be achieved. The monkey demon said all this as he laid out the tea and I got the impression of the yin yang but not the traditional yin yang the one with three opposing forces wrapped in an eternal struggle. I went to reach for the tea and woke up.

July 1st 2005 3:45 am

Moving to a new blog

Go here for the latest. Here is the run down. The trip to yellowstone was awesome. Blog to follow. Circjobs is a done deal. That side gig was killing me. Working at a lesiurely pace now with AMF. Rob and I are building a membership system for them pro bono. Laura is doing fine and we are having a good time. Mom is doing well enough, she is having problems with Arthritis so if you have any home remedies please feel free to let me know. I am battling stupidity at work when it comes to LDAP on the mainframe versus Active Directory. Also .NET is kicking my butt trying to connect to a mainframe LDAP just to check mother's maiden name for a single sign on project at work. Other things on the Mike P front... I am beginning work on a new personal site details will be released later. Let's just say its going to be a custom fancy blog with calendar and lots of goodies. More details to follow. Here is a pic with me and my band.

Take care and have a good day.

The day before Yellowstone 2k5

Just a quick note. Laura and I are packing up to head off into the backcountry of Wyoming, deep into the heart of Yellowstone National Park. Yes, I am determined to get my as chewed on by a bear if it kills us both.

Today, brought several trips to various stores for a variety of camping accuterments. But I think all in all we are ready to go. I for one will be ready for a serious break from laptops, programming and just life in general.

For the duration of our relationship, Laura and I have been road warriors. We both have driven 100 + miles for the past year and half to see each other one way. Every weekend we take turns or since her recent move to South Arlington, her and I have been flying on occasion. Regardless we are true tried and tested road warriors for love. So as only true road warriors would vacation we are flying into Denver only to rent a car and haul ass 594 miles to Yellowstone National. Here is the mapquest information.

Back to packing, then eat then watch Blade Trinity, sleep then hit the road jack at 6 am tomorrow. I freakin had a boner for it, but I couldn't justify it to myself. $400 for a cellphone is steep even for a die hard gadget freak like me.

So with the income tax check hitting the bank and the snide comment or two about the grandpa phone. I had to break down. No, I more likely could wait to break down. I was peeing my pants to buy this damn phone. I have kept an eye on these bastards for 4 years. The 650 came out around November of last year. So I knew prices would eventually drop on the 600. (I am still a cheap skate when it comes to technology.) But my god I had 4 years of crappy phones, filled pockets with other "necessary" gadgets and a buring desire to get the all in one.

The point of failure came when Rob came to my cube and said "Hey, Mahon let's go to the mall so I can get a new phone." After about a nanosecond of hesitation I agreed and we left for the mall. I knew from research that Verizon was 1) offering the Treo 650 in the next few weeks and 2) that Verizon is the best from consumer reports. So I knew who my carrier would be.

I walked up to the counter and they of course asked if they could help me. Help me... Save me more like. Save me from this burning freaking desire to get a damn uber phone, to fill the void in my life caused by MP3 players, cell phones, pdas, cameras and memory sticks all being strewn about the wasteland of my backpack like dead soliders in the war for the unifying theory of personal technology.

"Hell yes you can help me." But they couldn't They don't sell the Treo 600 at the mall. But they do at Circuit City! I couldn't hardly wait for 5 o'clock to roll around. I think I had a fine film of foam around my mouth at this time. My gadget libdo was in overdrive and nothing short of a blatant techno-orgy would fulfill it.

So 5pm rolled around and I headed straight for the shangri-la of Circuit City. I was prepared to spend around $400 bucks for the Treo 600. I was a nervous wreck though because my credit sucks and I thought for certain I would be turned down.

The Verizon guy set me free though in about 2 minutes when he told me that I wouldn't have to put down anything and that I could get the Treo if I wanted. Not only no down but he gave me the mail in rebates as instant rebates plus an additional rebate of $50 bucks. So out the door I rolled out with a uber phone for $162 bucks and change.

Its been almost two weeks now and I still love it. Taking pictures and emailing like a mad man. I have racked up almost 20 mg of downloads on the phone so far. I have no fear of space though since Wal-Mart had a 1 gig SD memory card for $83 bucks. I am so happy with this phone and with Verizon. Great service tons of features and a new world of software has opened up for me. Time now to learn some Palm OS programming stuff. Once I have something written and tested I will post it up for all to download. Have fun and whatever you do look good doing it.

Mike P

The 15 Mile Midnight Riders

It's 1:58 am and I will be peddeling my ass off in exactly 24 hours. The truth of the matter is I have a nut case for a best friend, who tirelessly drags me in to odd and strange situations if only for the "life" experience.

The route and logistics are all laid out on his blog. http://divineguitar.blogspot.com/ and you can read his take on this trip. Tomorrow @ midnight, no, probably more like 1:45 am on perhaps mile 11 of our midnight run, we may not be such close of friends but I will try to keep a smile on my face and air in my lungs.

Hacks & Tips

How to get out of debt
Improve your email and improve your life
A Hacker's Diet - Really, Write Code and Lose Weight
The Couch to 5k Running Plan
10 Ways To Live Longer
10 Tips for Better Sleep
Download of the Day: Wink
The Evil Real ID

Links of the Week

Here is a collection of links that I found interesting this week.

xtragoogle.com - This is a nice replacement for the crusty google homepage. It combines all the google search engines on one page. It can save you a few seconds when you need to do a specialized search in another engine offered by google.

You can do anything but not everything - This is an interview with productivity guru, David Allen. He wrote a book I highly recommend called Getting Things Done.

Google Web Accelerator - This sucker is fast cool and slick.

Backpack - I am still playing with this but here is what someone else says about it.

O'Reilly Radar - "Backpack will send you the contents of any page as email, and will accept email to any page as a way of adding to it. The format of the email containing a page's contents is exactly the same as the format it accepts to add to a page. In other words, email is a round-trip format for Backpack content: Backpack -> Email -> Backpack."

Thoughts on the Web 2.0 - This is a really interesting article on the internet and content mechanics. Here is a little teaser from it.

digital-web.com - "Enter Web 2.0, a vision of the Web in which information is broken up into “microcontent” units that can be distributed over dozens of domains. The Web of documents has morphed into a Web of data. We are no longer just looking to the same old sources for information. Now we’re looking to a new set of tools to aggregate and remix microcontent in new and useful ways."

CSS 102 - Part 2 of an article series I am reading about Cascading Style Sheets.

Code Crawler - My friends over at sourceforge have a nice piece of work here. It's a source code search engine for developers. By the way, anytime you hear the word developer it just means "geek on steriods".

Bill Gates On The War Path - You love him or you hate him. Regardless he is after a Google killer and will probably stop at nothing to get it. Here is the teaser.

Fortune.com - "...[Bill Gates] was poking around on the Google company website and came across a help-wanted page with descriptions of all the open jobs at Google. Why, he wondered, were the qualifications for so many of them identical to Microsoft job specs?"

Well, this is the first installment of some links of interest to me. It's alot cleaner than the crusty post after post crap I was doing. Let me know what you think via comments or whatever.

Mr. Rear of the Year

Being one of Rob's closest friends makes me privy to some of Rob's darker and more sinister secrets. Toby and I were guarding a top mafia guy. The top mafia guy went to use a public restroom. As he was taking a piss another top mafia guy walked in and started to pull his gun out. I was able to wrestle it way from him but managed to pistol whip him in the head so hard that accidently killed him. I didn't want to kill him for certain because he was higher than my boss and it may have been a mistake. But as it turns out I did kill him. I freaked out and ran.

I went into hiding at the fat gay guy from 7-11's house just because he had a freakin arsenal in his house with all kinds of secret passages. So as I am hiding out I get word from the fat gay guy who works at 7-11 (FGG711) that the mafia thinks I went to the cops. Toby and I always had a grudge against each other. So I assumed he tipped off the cops and blamed it on me. I am pissed off and decide its time for all out war.

Well a couple of days pass and I still don't feel safe but I venture out anyway way just to get some fresh air & think because FGG711 is out one day and that bastard can talk your leg off. So I am walking down the street in what looks like 11th street in Austin near the elementary school where the ledge next to the side walk is really high. It's dusk so you can barely make out shapes and features. I finish my cigarette and I see shadows moving behind a box truck. I immdiately turn the corner and hide behind the ledge. I pull out my gun and wait a second. I peer around the corner and see Mabella and Toby running down the side walk with compound bows and arrows. Toby is in front and as he rounds the corner I smack him full on in the face with the pistol.

Toby and I go at it for a minute or two. I wanted to keep him alive to tell me the truth about the cops but as he swings a switchblade he pulled right where my throat had been Mabella fires an arrow right where my head had been. The arrow struck Toby right between the eyes and he falls dead. I pick up the gun I had dropped in the hand to hand with Toby and fire right as Mabella is notching another arrow, killing her instantly.

Tired and worn out I make it back to FGG711's house and crash on the couch. My girlfriend and my mom have swung by to make dinner. Which is odd because the last thing you want when you are trying to hide out is to bring other loved ones in to harms way.

So I head to the bathroom to wash off the blood from the fight with Toby. I glanced out the bathroom window and I see two Mercedes switch off their lights and begin to roll down the back alley. I turn and moved quickly to the kitchen gathering up my mom and Laura and shove them into one of the secret passages in the house, yelling at them to stay together and stay down. I then roll to the arsenal closet and begin to load up.

Just as I am loading up my Dad walks in behind me and starts to load a 9mm. He has a knack for this kind of thing. After Vietnam he went to work for the mob, first as a low level guy then he worked his way up to the chief of security for the cappo. With out a word he moves out the back door to a walled in stone facade in the backyard taking up position and armed to the teeth. Shotgun, uzi, 3 or 4 nine's, a few grenades, he is armed and ready. I have a similar load as I head out the back door.

Just as we are in position keen and alert my mom pops out and offers us cookies. I push here back inside and tell her to get Laura back down to the hiding spot. With some protest she obeys finally.

The Benz rolled right up to the back gate. Still with its lights off and shining in the mist that had begun to fall. The other Benz pulling right beside it in the alley. As the back doors open up my dad and I lay down a monumental wall of lead at the cars. Tossing a grenade and still firing my dad and I in snyc keep moving opposite each other. In a pincer move, designed to trap the enemy in a hailstorm of bullets. He and I are on either side protected by marble statues in the backyard. Still popping out and firing when from behind me the FGG711 rolls out of the back door with my mom in tow.

My dad yells for me to go get him a goddamn cookie and he is still picking off what is left from the mobster at the backdoor. As I begin to walk up to FGG711 he produces a gun and puts it to my mom's head. He says he's going to turn me in to the cappo. Still aiming my gun I see Laura creeping up behind him. He orders me to put my gun down. I comply and my dad yells at me asking for a goddamn cookie. Without hesitation Laura produces a gun, points it right at the back FGG711's head and pulls the trigger. My mom screams and I wake up.

I know this was a dream 1 because Laura would never touch a gun and 2 because my Dad is an accountant, he was never in Vietnam nor are he and I anywhere neared skilled in warfare enough to kill 8 mobsters armed to the teeth. Also my mom rarely makes cookies she perfering to make chocolate cakes without icing. You maybe wondering what kind of mom is she to not put icing on the cake. I will have you know she does even better completely saturating the pan after greasing it with sugar. The sugar kinda carmelizes in the pan and bakes an even carmelly goodness all over the outside of the cake. You should try it its delicious. Also I quit smoking 5 days ago and am doing pretty good with it.

Take care,

MM

Confessions of a coffee slut

I am a coffee slut. I quit smoking using the patch and it seems they give me rather vivid disturbing dreams. So lacking any self respect here goes my dream.

At work we have this cafeteria area called Scooter's. My lord does it suck. The prices are high and the food at the local McDonald's dumpster is better than the slop they serve there. In fact, I think they get most of their ingredients from the N. Lamar McDonald's dumpster. So if you see a blind guy digging through the dumpster back at the McDonald's, please send a pic from your mobile phone or draw a rough sketch and email it to me. Back to the dream.

The lady at the end of the line. The quintessential "Lunch Lady" is I am sure someone's beloved wife and grandmother, however she and I it seems had a fling. Or at least, what I thought was a fling. There was no pictorial in and out, no view below the upper chest, but there was alot of bumping and grrrhhhing and moaning. So I am assuming we were having sex. Let me, rephrase that, I regret to think we were having sex. I say that because in my dream there was no actual visual I got of insertion or anything. Just the subtle hint of her moaning and groaning. I think I am going to be sick.

As we were doing some deed (this may have not been having sex), the thought kept occurring to me, damn, where is this woman's G-spot. I can't find it or I couldn't find it. But the sick thing is that I was ACTUALLY looking for it on or in the Lunch Lady. I am never eating a breakfast taco again. I need to go shower now. I feel dirty. It kept rolling through my mind, "My God I can't find her G Spot!!! She is going to think I am bad lover. I can't have that." I think I am afraid to sleep now.

Have a good day,

Mike

What's On Your Playlist

Here's mine, in this order:

Snow Patrol - Grazed Knees
Grandaddy - Now It's On
The Doves - There Goes The Fear
Belle & Sebastian - Piazza, New York Catcher
Divine Comedy - Come Home Billy Bird
Soundtrack of Our Lives - Midnight Children
Nuetral Milk Hotel - King Of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1
Radiohead - Drunken Punch Up At A Wedding
Belle & Sebastian - Asleep on a Sunbeam
Kiaser Chiefs - Modern Day
The Chemical Brothers - Galvanize w/ Q-Tip
Spoon - The Delicate Place
The Flaming Lips - Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell

So reply back and let me know what you're listening to...

Two Brothas... I am sitting here trying to work on a project that just won't die. I was going to this coffee shop by work. Day in, day out. Got to know everyone there. A hip little joint, lots of college kids, just a cool fun place to work. It's called flightpath. A nice place good coffee and just a nice atmosphere to work in.

Well, as time passed, I got tired of going there everyday, but I kept going anyway trying to get this project done. I am nearing the end of the project when I went to the convience store right by my house to pick up a pepsi and low and behold a new coffee shop opened up not 3 blocks from my house. What's more... It's been in business for 6 months and I never noticed it.

So tonight's the first night at Kenny's Coffee Company. I fuckin roll up in here and it's calm, cool and collected. Jazzy kinda shit is playing, the sun is shining, birds are chirping. I am still feeling sick but I am slopping code out and just doing fine when, WHAM!!! The fucking PTA (or some other coven of middle-aged uber soccer moms) roll-up in a calvalcade of SUV's and mini-vans. There must be a full gaggle of them. I am not sure how many a gaggle is but my god there are alot.

So far I have heard how well Sophia is doing in school. How little Tommy is having trouble and it's the teachers fault (bitch, if you were at home helping little Tommy with his math instead of sitting on your fat Wal-Mart ass bitching and sipping lattes he might improve). I have also heard about how Bill is a jerk and she might divorce him. How the bond election is going and way way way more freakin information than I ever needed to know.

I have never had this experience of being privy to 14 conversations at the same time about umpteen billion children and to tell you the truth its a little disturbing. I am not saying I am scarred for life or that I object to getting married and having kids (completely) but, if this is what marriage and children is all about, shove that mini-van full of soccer balls up your ass.

Frankly, this coffee shop might not work out. For one, I drink alot of coffee. 4-5 cups a day. About a pound of sugar with light cream. That in combination with almost 30 cigarettes a day means I will live about 18 more minutes. As far as the smoking situtation I have heard three curtesy coughs so far and I have only gone out to smoke twice in 2 hours. I love those kind of subtle hints... "Your smoke is bothering me," bitch your mini-van is taking up two spots and that's a diaper bag not a combination, first aid kit, diaper bag, pharmacy and purse.

Well, back to work. I will bitch more later.

Mike P

Mike's Top Ten Movie Star Chicks

This is for Chris. He and I got into a conversation about movie stars and which ones were hot. Seems I have very different tastes than him. My throat is sore, my body aches, I think I am getting a fever, sleeping doesn't help just makes it worse and I feel like my head is in a freaking space helmet. Well, my buddie's maple syrup has gone. Better to have loved and lost than to have stepped on a rusty nail. From what I can tell it was a crazy little jaunt into uncharted territory for both. A-hoy captains of the sea, two ships passing in the night. Godspeed. Similarly, the limey bloke too has gone back to the queen and all is safe in America, for now. Good luck and smoke up my friend, I saw more of you than I would ever care to; but the pillow talk was nice. Get your Visa ready and come back whenever Downing street will let you.

I turned 30 this month... My god how time doth fly. Here are a few lessons I learned along the way.

1. Save your freakin’ work often.
2. My parents usually know what’s best for me most of the time.
3. It is in my nature not to listen to my parents most of the time.
4. A penny saved, compounded with interest over 30 years is a shit load of money.
5. To everything, turn, turn, turn.
6. Maxims, sayings, resolutions, mottos and mantras only work for the narrow minded.
7. The world is larger than people would have you believe.
8. Seek first to understand then to be understood.
9. Reading is exercise for the mind.
10. Calculus for my mind is like running a marathon, in a full parka, up hill, in a 100 degree heat.
11. Fears can only create opportunity.
12. Time is the most valuable commodity on earth.
13. Be love and you will be everything you need to be.
14. Immerse yourself in art, literature, music and craftsmanship. Weave it into the fabric of your life and you will benefit.
15. No matter how hard your life is, someone-somewhere has worse problems than you and just stepped in some dog shit right now.
16. Time spent with family and friends pays dividends.
17. You are not your bank account, your car, your house, your clothes or any of your possessions.
18. There is always a version 2.
19. Learn to say no.
20. Say no for good reason.
21. Saying you don’t have time means you don’t care.
22. It’s ok not to care.
23. Life will teach you what you need to know whether you like it or not.
24. Listen to the music.
25. Life without passion is wasted.
26. If you are hungry eat, if you are angry meditate, if you lonely talk to someone, if you are tired sleep.
27. Striking up conversations with complete strangers is how friendships begin (or the art of attracting a stalker.)
28. God I love coffee.
29. The only thing you are given in life is time, use it wisely.
30. Somewhere on Google is the answer.
31. 90% of finding a solution is to understand the problem.
32. 97% of what you worry will happen, won’t.
33. TV robs you of time.
34. In fights between lovers, no one wins.
35. Hope.
36. Choose your battles wisely.
37. Take your medicine.
38. Do or do not there is no try.
39. And now young [Insert Your Name Here], you will die.
40. Smile.
41. An education is only as valuable as you make it.
42. Great ideas are a dime a dozen, finished products are worth a million bucks.
43. Know when to hold’em, know when to fold’em, know when to walk away and know when to run.
44. Travel every chance you get.
45. Your worst enemy can be your attitude.
46. Carry the weather with you.
47. Be there for someone often.
48. We are all students of life, bring a pen and pad.
49. Approach life with some kind of plan, if only to see it fail miserably.
50. You are far greater than you imagine.

So with all that I am off to try and sleep, I just hope I don't suffocate on my own snot.

Mike P

Just some Photoshop fun down on the drag.

Chinese For Life! Each F5 brings me closer to the next F5 in a series of constant bombed out, sometimes mind fucking errors. I will continue to hammer it out. Nail down feature after feature and try to appear cool and interested in this work. Left brain over drive, eating my soul away and flicking it out with the press of keys. I hate living in a box. I hate living in a god damn box. In an insulated, logical world where the only future I have is F5.

F5 can blow my mind sometimes. F5 is my mild electric shock in a .NET Pavlovian response to programming. And when F5 isnt enough it's usually followed by a series of F11... F11... F11... Check this value, check that value. Christ will it all end sometime soon?!?

Time to F5

Singing ~ To All The ASP.NET Applications I Loved Before!!!

I am sorry. That's it. That is my one appology for writing shitty code. We had great times together and learned alot from each other. But, and there is the but. I cannot go on supporting you, sure we can have coffee sometime and maybe tweak a little but these days a coder has to be ready for change and I am sorry but you and I are just in different places. Classic ASP I dont even want to see you ever again and that's that. To C# though you look awefully sexy but I barely speak your language still hot though. Back to you ASP.NET 1.1, things worked for awhile but like I said I changed you didn't and that's not something you can blame yourself for. So please, take care my sweet shittily written .NET applications, ASP.NET 2.0 is more in tune with my thoughts and if I don't explore I will never know. I will send you a note every now and then from the forefront of being LOSTINDOTNET <2.0>!!!

Tis better to live and love than just sit at a fucking computer all day,

Mike "P" Mahon

Ripping DVD's

For those who need to create backups of their dvd's let me recommend DVD SHRINK. It packages up your DVDs in an ISO file so you can burn a copy of them as you please. I used this plus a 250 gig usb drive to keep most of my dvd's close to online. It's alot better than re-shrinking the DVD's when I need another copy because the first one messed up. I have a bad habit with disks. I throw them everywhere and wonder why they dont work.
